Cinema rules my life. Is this healthy? It sure feels good. Yum. Hey I’ll discuss nearly anything, but expect a film reference (at very least an allusion) to enter the conversation. My work last weekend was to watch three Bruce LaBruce and two Gregg Araki videos. My fellow Industry programmers at the Toronto Film Festival needed me to brainstorm interview questions for the Maverick directors. If this is my ‘homework’ then I’m in the right business.
I recently looked to my fellow cinephile coworkers for an indication of my future sanity. They’re healthy and hilarious people, with occasional complaints of festival stress and long days apart from their mates. Me? I can’t fucking get enough of everything festival. Every day in August, I left work invigorated and either called friends until someone was free, or cuddled up with a film. During all ten days of Toronto International Film Festival, I’m working at the Industry Centre from 9-6, helping run about twenty filmmaker sessions, and still trying to see at least a dozen films. As I enter my fifth year of film school at York, I confess that film has been my number one priority, even above the fairer sex. You may think that this is a little obsessive, but it could be worse. I could be dull and un-passionate (or only watch a film a week like some film students I know. What the fuck is that about?).
The driving force of my editorial: if you feel like you too are utterly obsessed with cinema, give me a call and we’ll go for a dinner and a movie. (Ha ha! I was never worried about whether my obsession was healthy or not; this was all just a shameless plug to get a date this weekend. Ha ha!)
