Rarely do I quote the wisdom of famous people in my daily life. And I absolutely never quote movie characters. It’s not my style. I talk about fictional characters with fellow movie enthusiasts, maybe even celebrate a great line, but always with a knowing wink. Never would I recite seriously the wisdom of a character.
Except for this one time.
Not surprisingly, it was when I was enjoying a few drinks with friends. Soon we broke open a bottle of bubbly. Feeling particularly spunky, and thinking it somehow apt, I raised my glass and unleashed my profound wisdom upon my unsuspecting friends:
“Champagne for my real friends. And real pain for my sham friends.”
I had seen 25th Hour the previous month. In the movie this toast had come off so very smooth.
“Champagne for my real friends. . . And real pain for my sham friends.”
Of course, it takes an Edward Norton, in a Spike Lee joint, to make this sound cool.
