Searching For Vinyl
by Lisa Hood-Anklewicz
In this world of digital media, why do I keep finding myself looking backwards when I can simply press a few buttons on my keyboard and have all the music I could want delivered straight to my iPod (after the “virtual” swipe of my credit card of course). Why have I suddenly become obsessed with hunting out everything on vinyl?
It’s true that my husband and I dug out and dusted off our record player recently, but that was more of an afterthought than a cause. I find myself online searching through auctions for these little gems. During my walks downtown, I keep taking the “long way,” wandering down side streets and places I haven’t explored, looking for a new shop window that might fancy my interest.
I haven’t used a record player in since I was 12 years old. Most of the vinyl that I owned at the time is mixed in somewhere with my fathers collection, consisting mostly of Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, those ever-present Mini Pops, and that staple copy of Thriller.
So why now 15 years later am I once again hungry for vinyl? I suppose there is a small chance that I could be tying to recapture my childhood in some form, I’ve just got to leave the Mini Pops behind. Maybe it’s the fact that since we moved to our new apartment, our vinyl collection is actually on display with the rest of our music, and the CD collection, well it makes the vinyl look pitiful.
Who knows what it is. For now it’s my obsession, and hey, if you’re reading this and you want to send me some of your old records, I’m all for that, I just don’t have any money!
